Yearly Member Dues

Why is it that membership dues are once a year? Sept 30th is that because of the fiscal year ending and starting? Seems to me this is big complaint being aired about the PPFA and hurts membership.

Can't this be updated? Prorate membership, do monthly/quarterly installments directly from credit card info? Wouldn't this also help with cash flow, if that is a issue? Is there a fear some one could just cancel membership?

Unless something has changed, after a certain point in the year (I think it is April) even the discounted new member dues cover a full year PLUS whatever remains of the current year. A new member can get up to 18 mos for their dues.

That is not how it was back when I was a member last. I was sent a renewal notice 2-3 months after joining :mmph:.
If this was changed so that I got a full year, I would sign up right now.

Greg,
It's been that way for quite a long time down here. Not sure if the period is exactly six months!

Dave,
If that's the biggest issue you have with rejoining, hopefully your wait and our wait for you to join us will be over very soon!

Randy,
This does seem to be an issue with some people, like Dave, but it may be from quite a while back. People have long memories in relation to a negative experience. It seem to overwhelm any positive experiences. Hopefully the system Greg described is eliminating that!

Paying quarterly would certainly lighten the load for many framers. Pro rated for new members might be a good idea!

When I pay for the registration for my car I have a choice. Either pay for 1/2 year or one year. One year works out cheaper, but is a bigger sum to pay. Registration (tax, road-user charges etc.) expire half year or year from last payment.
Surely the PPFA can set up a similar system.

Seems easy to change the payment options.....unless you are the one who has to do the work. This is one we will have to run by staff and see what is possible. But I have to warn you, even if it is possible, implementation will take some time.

Have to check, but I'm pretty sure the grace period starts in June.
Any NEW member signing up June to October is good until their second renewal date.
That offer has been there has long as I can remember. My guess is your invoice was an error, Dave.

That said, the grace period could change. It's in the PMA boards hands to the best of my knowledge.

Should I introduce the concept of a monthly billing membership program.

Some companies use it very effectively I have heard.

Monthly billing might fall through the cracks, IMO, so I think annual is still a good idea. (as someone else suggested) It would be nice to see it start from (and expire a year from..) the day you apply, not on a fixed schedule.

However, there may be software issues/challenges to look at. The membership software (IMIS) is set up a certain way, and PPFA is probably not the only group sharing it within PMA. Before something like that can be considered, someone will have review any software implications. I supported a very similar (trade organization) client, until a few years ago, which used the same software. Their organization did the same thing, with a fixed yearly renewal date.

Looking on the vendor's site, I see that it supports "Annual Billing: Used when all renewing customers have the same Begin and End dates. The Begin Date could vary for new customers who join later in the year, and their dues can be prorated for a partial term." and "Anniversary Billing: Used when the membership terms fluctuate; usually corresponds to each customer's Join Month or subscription Begin Month." However, while a change like this sounds easy - it could also mean a lot more work for the folks at the office. Everything would have to be done twelve times per year, instead of once per year. (billing, following up, email blasts, re-billing those who did not respond, mailing out materials, etc) So there are probably a lot of things to be considered, including the increased labor costs, for this to happen.

This would be a good topic for board discussion/consideration, IMO.

Mike
