Healthy discussion welcomed!

I have had calls from people because of my Pinterest boards, and have found pics of my shop on Instagram, so I need to sign up for that. I have had several people use my coupon on Foursquare.

Most of my non-referral / non-contact new business is from my website, (which is nothing special) and from the PPFA find a framer.

I don't advertise on Google, but apparently I'm high in the rankings so I get noticed. Three of my last 5 new customers live more than 50 miles from me. (and driving by 20 to 30 other framers). Two mentioned my impact on the web. (the third was a referral).

I have a small showing in Facebook, but I don't know of any new business from there.

I think that Linked In might be an option that might be helpful, so I plan on looking into that more than just linking in with others, in the next several months.

I will add Instagram, starting with the two votes mentioned previously in this thread.

The poll software is very simple. Its either select one, or select several. It cant do follow-up questions to see how effective each is, but we can discuss that here.

Results will also vary for different markets and businesses. For us, the website (although not "social media" and part of this survey) has always had the best return over the past dozen years. Facebook gets a lot of interest, but it is mostly from framing peers and relatives. SOME customers have found us on Facebook, too.

Thanks to all for participating in the FMO/FC survey and discussion!

We also have a website and I have been selling some inventory on ebay. Did get one customer that found me on ebay and then came to the store.

I think you are going in the right direction, Robin. Using social media type outlets to actually generate sales is smart business.

Interesting to see that there are more framers using Facebook than an E-Newsletter. The former is fun and easy, but the latter is where the real money can be.

Most framers don't take social media participation as a job, and like any job, it needs regular attention. I am paring down my use to Facebook forwarded to Twitter, E-Newsletters, Occasional Pinterest, and Linkedin for corporate sales. Instagram is not a social media outlet per se, but one's business can now have an Instagram page. I need to give mine some attention.

Now with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using hash tags, you can search for your city, your neighborhood, even store, so your post should include generic terms some one might search for, for instance, I am in a historic building, and ran across the hash tag #nickelsarcade and found a picture of us loading a giant painting outside while someone had snapped a picture of it and posted it.

Overall I agree with Kirstie, I need to refocus on my website, a newsletter, doing sales on Etsy or Ebay and from the website is the direction I want to take.

That is my problem. I do not make time to do the enewsletter. I did one and got great response. Need to just make time to do another and get some set up for future use. I really want to do it but keep putting it off. Just need some encouragement!

Thanks Robin

Although I see most of us promoting Facebook, I wonder how much of our time (we spend on it) vs return we get out of it? As opposed to sitting down and working on a newsletter or building our websites?

Randy,

You have elluded to a couple of truths regarding Social Media IMHO.... A well maintained and changing website is of number one value. 2... It all takes time so that we really need to pick and choose where that time and effort and sometimes money is spent. So far, I feel that FaceBook still holds the most potential for us as retailers/picture framers/shop owners, in that it is a great combination of human and business mix...allowing us to reach out to our existing and potential customers in a friendly and non-threatening manner.
