Vivian was one if that best teachers in any industry. We need someone to carry on her teaching. If she was still with us I think she would have produced more videos showing using our CMC and other new toys. Being one of the newer framers I would like to see someone produce videos on the different aspects of the business. Jim Miller I think would be good at this. I'm a visual person and have a hard time reading and doing.
I also would like to photos of work rooms.

At the conventions most CMC companies will teach classes or have demonstrations on the show floor as to how to use the machines. Also most of the companies can be contacted to present at the chapter level and some do have webinars available.

What other "New Toys" are you talking about? Have you contacted the company to see if they have any webinars or do any classes?

Another thought would be to find someone close by and see if you could go hang out with them for a day to see how the equipment works.

Being new I would suggest you budget to attend the Annual Convention to take some classes and check out WCAF.

You mentioned that you are one of the younger framers. As a suggestion, I found a couple of other PPFA framers and had them kind of mentor me, when I had questions. They were very helpful.

Also, make sure you are very active in your chapter - this way you can help determine what kinds of classes your chapter will have.

Vivian had some wonderful educational information, she was well respected, and I certainly used her materials. However, in fairness for some of the exceptional framers and educators we currently have, times have changed since Vivian's time, and it is much more difficult to profitably produce the materials.

There are probably only 1/3 of the framers today, as there were back in the heyday of framing.

Educational materials are expensive to produce and those that produce such need compensation for their time, and with fewer framers, it is more difficult to get the return for their initial investment.

Newer framer. Not younger. Been framing for 40 years but not to the extent I am now. I've been to a private class she held years age. My problem is as I've gotten older its better for me to have a video to watch over and over. I have all her books and videos.

With all due respect to all of our current educators and with recognition of the changing marketplace, Vivian was quite the cheerleader, and it is that I miss the most. No matter how bad the situation, she always seemed to be able to bring out smiles and encouragement.

Johnny,

Just noticed you are in TN be sure to come to the meeting in Nashville in October. There are members in your chapter that would be more than willing to help you out. Mikki and Mike have a great day of education lined up at the end of October and it would be a great place to meet your chapter members.

I fully understand the aspect of watching the videos several times it does help. But the next best thing is an in person class. There are a few webinars on the PPFA website, you can search from the home page PPFA Webinar. Also here is a link to the full webinar listing on the PMAi site
http://www.pmai.org/online/core/orders/category.aspx?catid=52

It does seem if you search the PPFA.com site there are a couple other webinars that pop up.

Hope this helps and Hope to see you in October, BTW we are having the Framing Competition that weekend also if you are interested in entering Contact Mikki Kavich or Mike Drury

Thanks Robin

This might be an easier link for reading about the Webcasts:

http://www.pmai.org/content.aspx?id=18725

You'll find webcasts from Jim Miller, David Lantrip, Greg Perkins, Carol Graham, and more - on selling, pricing, preservation framing of various items, and Intro to the CPF Exam, and Intro to the MCPF Exam.

You can then order from the online store that Robin provided a link for - or email Nick Shaver for more info, nshaver@pmai.org, or call him at 800-762-9287. Lots of Vivian's books and DVDs available as well, for anyone who doesn't have them.

Hope this helps!

I really miss Vivian too - I worked closely with her when she was speaking at Chapters and the Annual Convention, and we worked on promoting October as National Art & Framing Month. As Greg says, a great cheerleader for PPFA and for the framing industry.
Wicked funny sense of humor too  - she would send me funny cards that would really make my day.

Hey Johnny Did you connect up with Barb?

Hope you can make it to Nashville October 26-27 so we can meet you in person!

Two great classes with ROb Markoff.

One hands on learning wax finishes. I took this class form him years ago and have used it so many times.

The second on is a class every framer needs about light and UV and fading.

You will get an e-mail with more info next month.

Also make sure you like our KY/TN facebbok page for more info!

Mikki
