Scholarship Winners?

You go to ppfa website, click on qualifications and scholarships. They are there somewhere.
One of the requirements for the MCPF Exam scholarship is doing community-service. Being part of the local chamber of commerce and being an officer in that group with certain duties or tasks should fit that bill.

Kai,
I'm not sure what website you are referring to, but 'Qualifications' is not one of the clickable topics on the PPFA website!
The only way I could find anything about scholarships was to search for it!

Also, there is nothing about community service in the Vivian Kistler MCPF scholarship pdf that I was able to download! I have never heard of this requirement before. Perhaps you could post a link to where you found this information?

Maybe I'm just too dumb to find it???

Scholarship Information

Thanks for your inquiries about the CPF and MCPF scholarships. They are offered each year and we encourage those that meet the requirements to apply.

The CPF scholarship (L. Thomas McKeon CPF Scholarship) information can be found on the CPF Certification Page: http://www.pmai.org/ppfacontent.aspx?id=20350

The MCPF scholarship (Vivian C. Kistler MCPF Scholarship) information can be found on the MCPF Certification Page:
http://www.pmai.org/ppfacontent.aspx?id=20351

Please check our website around August 2013 for more information or feel free to contact PPFA around this time for more information.

We haven't announced the winners yet, so stay tuned! The selection committee is still working hard on tallying the results!

Thanks Ormond, also for explaining the difference between convex and concave.
If you go the the application-form for the Vivian Kistler scholarship, right at the bottom of the form is stated:
In addition......outlining your involvement in your community, PPFA and educational accomplishments and work history.

Thanks Laura for posting the direct link.

Kai-

I am not sure that "community involvement" is the same as "community service"

I would intrpret community service as participating in a beach clean-up, working in a soup kitchen, painting electrical transformer boxes, etc.

On the other hand, community "involvement" might be having a booth for your company at a home decor show or street fair, writing a column for your local paper on framing, giving lectures to local art groups or schools on framing techniques, donating mat board fallout to local schools, etc.

To me, community service has no financial benefit, where community involvement could include promotion of framing in general and/or more specifically of your own company for (potential) financial gain.

Could someone from PPFA please confirm?

Rob, every year a different committee is formed to evaluate the scholarship applications.

At least in the year I was on the committee, we were given general guidelines and "scoring instructions" (I don't remember the details of the scoring).

It was somewhat up to each of us to apply our own value system to the scoring.

Then, the scores were combined and results were tallyed.

Although each chairman can impose some twist on the process, I suspect some form of the same subjective evaluations with an "averaging" is what is still happening.

I'm not sure the "community" part serves as much more than a minor tie breaker.

Community Involvement

Rob - I think did a great job explaining community involvement. While your definition is somewhat up to your own interpretation, the judges are most likely looking for how you use your skills and expertise to benefit your community. Are you doing anything with framing after the lights go out each night at your shop?

We'd love to see creative ways you are serving your community with all those skills and talents you possess! Hope this helps!

I'd like to thank the scholarship committee, and especially chairman David Lantrip, for selecting me as one of the recipients. I received an informal but official notice three days ago and an official emailed letter today.

I doubt I'll have read (or reread) all the study materials in time for Las Vegas—can we say "Christmas Rush"?—so I may end up doing the online testing option.

CPF here I come! :thumb:
