Just out of curiosity.
An MCPF needs to recertify every four years to retain their qualification.
What happens if this framer forgets to recert. and the certificate expires?
Does the MCPF become a CPF even though that certificate also expired before that or does the framer lose both qualifications and start anew?

Re: recertification

Good topic Kai! Here's a question that is on the same topic. If a CPF leaves PPFA are they still a CPF? Can they use those credentials even though they are not current members? If they come back can they take the recert and all is erased?

Re: recertification

First, Susan's question is easy. Certification has nothing to do with being a PPFA member. Member or not changes nothing at all.

Kai's question is a bit harder and would require a ruling from the cert board since, as far as I can see, it isn't spelled out in any document. But, if I had to guess, there is no "starting over" involved. Once the recertification is lapsed the individual is not entitled to use the certification designation. At such time as they took the Recertification Class and any Continuing Education Credits required, their certification would be reinstated and valid.

EDIT: OOPS!!! see below. I was wrong.

Re: recertification

I was always under the impression if you did not contact the Cert Board and get a waiver to take the recert class within a set amount of time you would have to retest. The re-certification class does come on DVD so you do not have to attend in person to take the class. Order the DVD, answer the quiz at the end, submit your answers and wait for the new certificate.

I am sure one of the Cert Board members will straighten us all out so we know the right answer!

Also, as long as you maintain the criteria to be a CPF, do your re-cert classes you do not have to be a PPFA member to hold the designation. There are separate costs for members and non-members to test and re-cert.

OK, I take it back. From the Certification Guidelines:

from the CPF section ...

3.7 Completion of the PPFA Recertification Course is required every four years.
Those who have certified before 1994 are grandfathered and not required to recertify.
Failure to recertify within the year of a designees expiration will result in the revocation of the designation and will require a retake of the CPF® exam.

and from the MCPF section ...

4.2.7 Completion of the PPFA Recertification Course is required every four years as well as 3 MCPF™ level continuing education classes in the same four year period. Failure to recertify or complete the continuing education classes within the year of a designee’s expiration will result in the revocation of the designation and will require a retake of the MCPF™ exam.

So, Kai's question, I think is MCPFs retake the MCPF and CPFs retake the CPF. An MCPF doesn't appear to have to retake the CPF.
