Meghan's 'wish' for a class, in another topic, came 24 hours after I was looking through my notes and Powerpoint on a class I taught - "Photographing & Editing Finished Frames".

I wondered what I could do with it? Make it available it to all framers or just PPFA members?
Should I just give it away for free, or would anyone pay a small amount for it?

With a few modifications it could be in the form of instructions, with photos, illustrations and screen shots showing how the editing is done in free software and Photoshop.

I often look at some of the photos, on forums and it's obvious that some framers are dreadful photographers and even worse at editing. Some photos look like they've been taken with a box of crayons and a piece of dirty paper!

What should I do with this info?

I think you've got a very good idea and with all due respect to the list of PPFA educators, no one is giving much away.

Make it into a class and charge.

Maybe you could make enough to cover the cost of flying to the US.

Yep, webinar. Easier for you, faster for me!

Which doesn't mean you shouldn't develop it into a class and get PAID to come to Vegas! Not much, but you might be able to get one of those teenie tiny yachts for the bathtub.:shame:

I'm all for you coming back to teach that class!!
But a webinar would be awesome!
We used to have some of those offered that you could pay for and watch then have a link to the info later when you forgot something!

Great idea Ormond for you to intend to pass on your knowledge of photographing framed items. This is an essential skill for those framers who like to set up their own website without hiring a professional photographer. Other uses can be brochures about your business, ads in papers or magazines that can do with a picture of a framed piece of artwork. The list goes on.

Another means of communicating your knowledge is to write a book about it. I have to say, that writing a book is time-consuming, expensive to print and more and more people refer to the web for information. Printed books are quickly outdated, whereas webinars can be updated more easily. In my home the books have been relegated to the garage, whereas they used to be in the hallway. Pictureframing books I have in a shelf at work, but if I am after solving a problem, then a few clicks on Framers Corner will give me an answer too.

So, yes, I am all for a webinar on this topic. Others have done it and earn a small amount of money from it. Most of us are business-people.

Ormond,
The question is...will you bring Tim Tams to your class? There's this one guy from your side of the pond that has spoiled us and it will be hard to compete. :smile-new:

Seriously, I think that it is a wonderful topic. A webinar or live class is a super idea. One other idea is that it would be a cool benefit for new members and rejoins to get Ormond' photo class webinar for this year's join/rejoin. What a useful gift, unless you are already a Photoshop expert. The class might have been given at previous framing convention, but that was several years back.

OMG, I was just talking about this with my artist sister...

I used to be a pretty decent landscape/cityscape photographer a couple lifetimes ago but could never wrap my brain around product photography. I take terrible photos of my finished framing. Ormond, I would be the first to sign up for your class in any way, shape or form!

Let us know where and when....:pop2:

Ormond,Great Idea! I would defiantly take the class and pay for it! Not sure about waiting until the WCAF though. If you make it a webinar or PDF we can offer it as an educational topic in our monthly PPFA meeting.

Where is the LIKE button? I need instructions on How to photograph a finished frame. That is a skill that wouls help any serious picture framer. Ormond ... Yes please!:thumb:

Ormond, a class on photogaphing frames would be great for me, and I'm sure you could do an excellent job of teaching it. Trouble is, if you offer it at the PPFA convention/WCAF, I may have to be teaching in another classroom at the same time. So for me, a webinar would be more useful, even though the time and content would be limited in that teaching format.

I am not a photographer, nor do I have any sophisticated or professional camera equipment, but I have to photograph lots of frames, assemblies, and hands working at the table for books, articles, and PowerPoint presentations. I almost always use room light, a tripod, and a simple backgound.

This would be a good class and webinar, I can see myself taking and using both. Right now I have very few photographs because it takes me so long to figure out how to get a good shot and then it still is not very good. Being able to show examples of before and after and of completed work would be fabulous for the web and for a portfolio to show customers, especially brand new customers. It also has the possibility to boost the bottom line when the customer can see examples of a particular technique or enhancement. Yes please!!! Sign me up!

Thanks for all the replies! I wasn't keen for a webinar originally, but will have to consider that, since so many people like the idea.

Jim,
The photographic equipment you listed is pretty much exactly what I use. I know you have the same camera, not sure about lenses. In fact, no "sophisticated" equipment is required in order to produce very good quality photos.
There is as much chance of me teaching a class at the Melbourne convention or any other convention as you have of flying to the moon by flapping your arms! Only people who have an established reputation as an educator get those positions.

My original thoughts on this topic were brought about be seeing some pretty ordinary photos of frames and I thought perhaps I might be able to make a few bucks. I'm not sure that it will be very lucrative, but I will consider all the other options in the next few weeks and make a decision on what to do about it.

Thanks again to everyone who has responded.

Question:
If I was to make a video seminar, including:
1. Equipment requirements,
2. Basic camera and photography information necessary for framers to produce great photos of finished frames,
4. Problems faced and solutions,
3. Demonstrations and examples of photographing frames,
4. Demonstrations of all necessary editing procedures in both free software and Photoshop.

Plus a pdf with screen captures and full instructions/how to's, ---------- would you pay for it and what do you think would be an acceptable amount?

PS. Inexpensive equipment will be OK.
PPS. KISS principle will be used.

The trouble with a webinar is that most are free. You need to find a sponsor ie: Larson Juhl, True Vue, Wizard, Adobe....etc.

I wouldn't be shy about asking to be on the educator list. They should be pleased to have new people step forward. I've attended lots of classes and most educators do a fine job. Some of the best are on this forum! I've also attended classes by well known educators that weren't worth a hoot. I've read your posts, here and on the G, and I'll bet you would be fine.

Ormond,
Finding a sponsor (LJ?) would give you more possibilities. This would be a great opportunity for a sponsor. Frame companies love to see their frames in a finished product, but if poorly photographed, it's not something that useful.

I still see this as a wonderful benefit for those who join or rejoin PPFA. That's if you did it as a webinar. If you had a sponsor, you would get paid, PPFA would have a new super benefit gift for membership and your sponsor would get some great exposure.

Susan

Thanks for the suggestions of getting a sponsor, but that's just not going to happen! There are so few supply companies down here and they aren't going to sponsor something like this!

Thanks for everyone's input and comments!

Back to the real world now!
