Hey, anyone incorporating this idea into their shop?

I think mine is going to be Create and Chill because I will offer more than just painting make and take.

Ordering supplies now...have to rearrange the gift area.

There are a couple of folks in my area trying this as stand-alone businesses. They seem to be having a good time, but I think there is probably a limit to repeat business. (But I thought a paint it yourself pottery shop couldn't make it either, and they are going great guns here). As an add-on to a frame shop, it seems like a natural new income stream. The downside for you might be working evenings, but you can probably limit this. I'll look forward to seeing how this turns out for you.

I looked at it, but the beer, wine & liquor laws here made it too burdensome for me.

We did a program last year called Social Artworking. It is a commercial program with patterns that the group traces on canvas, then the instructor leads the class through the steps to produce the artwork. I am cheap and so I traced the pattern off for each student, and used the paint that we have in the store, with little cups for each student. Probably not what the manufacturer had in mind.

We called it 'Social Artworking'. We found that there was a lot of student recruiting, as how many 16 x 20s does one person need in their life? And, no, we sold very few frames to the artists. And it really dropped off after the year. We did two sessions of the fall painting, and then it really dropped off.

Be sure the name gives a hint of what will take place.

Sounds like an excellent thing Randy but no Illustrator on my computer!
Ellen I am actually going about it a bit differently.
There will be painting but also jewelry and other "Pinterest" interest stuff!

The first painting is a Cheveron design thing using a painting technique with painters tape and "resist" method.

I also have an idea for a painted chalkboard or cork board class.
A Zentangle class that they will leave with a frame made from scrap.
That kind of thing.

No palms in the sunset I hope.

Gift sales have been very off this year and I want to utilize the space differently for a while. Riding a wave till it breaks or I move on to another thing.
Also this kind of thing is not available here at all next closest is 40 miles away.

Ellen I re read what I just posted and that did not come out right...

I have looked on line at a lot of the companies doing this sort of thing with the standard 16x20 and I agree with you no one needs a bunch of those.

So I am trying to re work the idea a bit differently. Painting wize I am thinking more bold graphic things maybe and less tree stuff.

May not work 2 hours with non-painters is always a challenge but I plan to only have 8 max because my shop is tiny.

Funny you did it last year...small town we are always so far behind. Better now with internet but still takes us a while to get to the next big thing!

We aren't soo big- 35,000 pop. I did the program because I saw it at NAMTA 2011. I like your idea. I am going to see if I can bend it to use the supplies we sell. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

As Cliff mentioned, I have been doing these since early summer. So far I would rate them as a success. As with any "add on" I consider it has to drive the custom framing side of thd business. Took the same approach with the digital printing. If it doesnt drive the custom side, I am not interested.

So with that said, I saw this as an oppotunity to increase awareness of my framing business and maybe make enough money to cover the costs plus a few bucks. I had tried the gallery idea in several different forms over the years and each attempt yeilded the same crapy results. I see this as having a somewhat limited life span so I am really focused on the art classes. I think will be viable forever.

As for our Paint & Wine Nights we have kept them simple. We provide the instruction, materials and the space (as well as a nice chocolate at each easel). The rest is up to the guests. They can bring any food and drink they want. Basically, I am providing a location for a get together.

You would think that selling them all frames when they are done is a no brainer... ya, well it is not as easy as you might think. I find that if one person buys one, then several will. Yet, more often then not, no frames are sold. (Puzzles me) It has however aceived the major goal and that is to drive the custom business. Many of the people who came for P&W have been back as first time framing customers.

... gotta take the kids to school.... will share more later.

The 2 shops here focus on an evening out with hor d'oeuvres, wine & drinks. Something a little different than the usual dinner & pub crawling. I have also seen groups booking lunch time parties for birthdays, etc. It is very similar to the model for the ceramic shops.

There is a gallery in town doing this and she actually pairs with a restaurant or other venue then goes there for the event. I have just recently talked to her about providing some ready made frames to see what happens. She did say she will do one this month then take a break for the holiday and start back after the first of the year.

Good Luck!
