I always wake up at five and listen to the news at six. The news was that Mt. Tongariro in the central North Island has erupted. There are three volcanoes next to each other, Tongariro, Ngaurahoe and Ruapehu on a large plain.
In 1995 Mt. Ruapehu erupted while I was overseas, so this is a first for me.

When it became lighter outside, I noticed some clouds above the small native forest next to our house. Then Sashni pointed to a huge thick gray cloud to the right. Spectacular. We cannot see the volcanoes from our house, but when I walk around the forest in my gumboots, I can see the largest volcano, Ruapehu on a clear day.
