This was something I wrote on the Grumble in regard to David Waldman's post about his great dividend check. I thought it might be of interest to PPFA. David, you are right to get a bid from other company's and it sounds like you did your homework and got a great deal from Medowbrook. My husband has been in the commercial insurance industry for almost 40 years and worked for a A+ rated company for 30 of those years. He has a CLU and ChFC which in insurance is a very big deal. It's a little like having a Masters Degree in insurance. He still maintains his licence in MN and WI which means that he still must do continuing education every year. He knows more about the framing industry and commercial insurance than anyone I know. The one thing he always says is to never be so loyal to a company that you don't keep them on their toes. To be so loyal that you don't get a quote from another company every few years can be costly. When I told him about this thread and the fact that people were getting a 12% dividend he said; "that is a great deal if they didn't pay too much up front. If they did pay too much it wipes out the dividend and will often cost more in the end". It sounds like Medowbrook did a fabulous job for you.
Being around the insurance industry for so many years and hearing the war stories has taught me that if you have to cut corners, don't do it when it comes to your business insurance. All it takes is one catastrophic claim that isn't covered to put you out of business. Penny pinching on coverage can come back haunt you and leave you with no means of support. The phrase, "a penny wise and a pound foolish" comes to mind when dealing with insurance. Don't be foolish.
Just incase someone is thinking that I am trying to give Paul a plug to send him more business, he still works part time for a small independent agency that does not cover frame shops so there is nothing in it for him.
