I recived two slate-prints for the 2013 Print-competition and will send one away and keep the other. I am in the Australia/ New Zealand Chapter, but because our chapter does not take part in the competition, I have to enter into the Mailbox-competition. Can anyone tell me, when the last date for submission is for the Mailbox?

This will be in Jackson, but is it possible to bypass the Mailbox-competition and enter Las Vegas next year?
There is also a list the candidates have to fill in stating methods, materials and equipment used. This was not included with the rocks. Do I have to download them from somewhere?

Go to http://www.pmai.org/PPFAContent.aspx?id=20354 which is under "Competitions" on www.PPFA.com

You should read carefully the guidelines document and the judges sheet. This will give you an idea what the judges look for.
The submission form for the PRINT entry is also there.

I believe you would be in the "International Mailbox" chapter.

In order to send an entry to the annual convention you must first place (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in a chapter competition.

Hopefully, some one from the compettion board can give you a better idea of when/how/where you send your entry.

mailbox competition info

Hi Kai,
Yes, you will have to enter the mailbox competition. This competition is still in planning stages but will take place in October in Michigan. An email blast will go out announcing the details later in the summer (June-August). It will contain info on how to order the Petroglyph, including the entry form. If you already have the piece, then you will need to get an entry form at that time. This form will include the shipping information and other instructions.

After all the chapter competitions are held, including mailbox, separate entry forms will be sent to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, as well as to any honorable mentions that are awarded, to the INTERNATIONAL FINALS held in Las Vegas 2013.

You cannot bypass the mailbox competition. Last year an exception was made because of the unique circumstances that came about due to the conference changes and late planning.

As Cliff mentioned, you can go to the PPFA site under COMPETITIONS and download the 2012-13 Guidelines, score sheets and description forms. These documents can help to understand the competition objectives and judging criteria.

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions on this forum or private email me. I am a member of the Competition Board, along with Linda Pujo, chairman and Fred Horton.

Good Luck to you, Kai.

Chapter Competition in Australia...

Kai,

I'm a little surprised that with the large number of Australian PPFA members that exist, that this Chapter doesn't hold it's own local competition first in Oz. Typically Profile magazine has their Framing Show in Sydney in July in alternative years of the PPFA-PMA show, and you might think that they would offer to co-host the competition?

Unless Frank still hosts his own framing competition at the show, which would obviously be conflictual. If this is the issue, then a separate meeting with the competition?

Perhaps Ormond or Quentin Webster will jump into this discussion. With the size of Australia and the large number of members, it would be nice to see the winners be sent to the US for the January 2013 Convention in Las Vegas.

John, The Competition Board agrees that it would be great if they could host their own chapter meeting. As we have seen in the past few competitions, there are some excellent competitors. It would be nice to see 3+winners from their chapter or area, rather than combining them with the entire mailbox group!
The CB has been discussing the possibilities with the leaders there, trying to work out the logistics. We hope that another solution can be worked out for future competitions.

Thanks for your input Cliff, Linda and John.
The two slates I received are on different colored and textured stones, so the combination I chose for one does not work for the other. This cannot be helped, but is something we have to be aware in judging.

With regard to the Australia/ New Zealand chapter holding its own competition. Ormond and Jared answered this issue earlier and it comes down to size and the requirement to have trained judges. It may come in the future.

For a framer in the US, Australia is just an island and we can stick the two main islands of New Zealand to it as well.
The reality is the distance and expense of traveling between the main centers where framers are located. I have not been to the South Island in ten years because of the expense. It is cheaper to fly to Sydney, than it is to Christchurch. For people in New Zealand, our disposable income has significantly decreased. Everything has gone up in price, petrol $2.10 a liter, yet the minimum wage is $13 an hour.

If we have PPFA chapters for the North and South Island, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Queensland and the remainder of Australia, then it may work. Framers will start to network more with each other, if the chapters are smaller and the distance of face to face communication is more realistic.

Jumping in -
Frank does hold a competition at the show and it is very successful. I'm not sure that the format of that competition will change!

A separate meeting with the competition is impractical. Our chapter occupies a land mass, much the same as the land mass of USA, where you have multitudes of chapters. Shipping of entries would be very costly, because we don't have the same shipping systems as in USA. Our population is so much lower that there are way fewer shipping companies and costs can be very high.

The winning entries would have to be shipped to USA. Shipping costs to USA and return can amount to $1500 or more! (Trevor and Jenny Yates are still waiting for their winning entry to return after Vegas.)

We do not have any PPFA qualified judges and I see little chance of that changing in the foreseeable future, because it's extremely complex to qualify. It's extremely difficult to get members to volunteer for anything, so something as complex as that will be absurdly difficult as they would need to travel to USA to do the classes and get some experience. More than one person would need to qualify to make the judging fair and equitable. At least three, I would think.

Judges, plus people to unpack and repack the entries would also be required to travel to a location at a different time to our conference in order to run the separate competition at quite a cost to themselves.

In my opinion running a separate competition under PPFA competition rules is not practical and it would certainly be a very expensive exercise for those participating and the organisers.

It was suggested that we could choose the top three from Frank's competition and send those, but many people who enter, don't comply with PPFA comp rules! People who judge Frank's competition judges don't necessarily use the same criteria or system as qualified judges! I don't see how this could work!

Lastly, we are not a legal chapter as in USA and Canada. It would be absurdly expensive to make that happen. If someone was aggrieved about the result of a judging and was to take legal action, who would be responsible? Judges - personally?

That probably sounds a little negative, but they are the facts! The Mailbox competition already works and doesn't have the above problems. In the immediate future, I think it will continue to work!

Original art

This is a common situation with any original piece that is chosen for the PRINT competition. If you remember the guitar piece from a few years ago, there were color and design variations in it. The judges are aware and score each piece accordingly. Personally, I can't wait to see the variety of designs and color combinations that framers come up with on a unique original PRINT piece!!
