I started a new thread on the Designers Showcase with "Just another Shadowbox". When we do this, at least when I do this, I would like to get comments, GOOD OR BAD, from other framers.
There has been 75 views with only 1 person responding. Not only is this uncool but it shows how much we respect each others work. I personally will never post a project because there is not enough respect from the other framers to make a comment - AGAIN - GOOD OR BAD. The comment are the reason we post, at least that is the reason I post one of my framing project. There are some things I dislike about this project but there are some things I like, it would be nice to hear from other framers what they think - maybe I can make some changes that will help with the next project. You cannot insult me...THANKS TO ALL THE FRAMERS THAT VIEWED THAT THEAD - YOU HAVE DONE GOOD WITH ALL YOUR COMMENTS AND THE HELP YOU GIVE TO A FELLOW FRAMER!!

Joe,
I was merely waiting for other framers to make comments, before I do, as I do not like to see my name on this forum everwhere. Sometimes I even wait for my name to disappear, before making a comment. It's the lack of participation, that saddens me on this forum. We can have such great discussion and exchange of ideas if more framers post.

Joe,
There are a couple of reasons why I personally have not critiqued your frame, but it.
1. I haven't been to that part of the forum lately, so I didn't see it.
2. You did not specifically ask for a critique and I am always reluctant to give an opinion (unless it's something I really like) unless someone has asked for opinions!

I am happy to check out your frame and give my opinion, but keep in mind that it's just an opinion and there are framers on this forum who are way better designers than me!

Thanks for the reply Ormond & Kai. I appreciate both of your responses. IMO when someone post pictures of a project they have completed they are asking for the critique even though it isn't specifically asked for. I may be wrong in my thinking and in the future will ask for a critique. I like to hear both the good and the bad - both will make me a better designer and more capable of guiding my customers to something they will enjoy for years in the future.

Ormond, an opinion is just that an opinion. Yours and mine may differ but I will always be able to learn from someone else's opinion. We all have a right to our opinion, luckily we have different opinions - it would be a darn boring world if we all like exactly the same thing.

Anyway, thank you both for responding, I really do appreciate it. :thumb:

Joe, we are all pretty nice here. Most of us will keep any negative criticism to ourselves unless you ask for a critique or there is something that bothers us so much that we feel like we must say something.

Of course, this too, is merely an opinion:smile-new:

I concur. I don't make negative comments unless asked for them and I am sure they will be received ok. I have dealt with people that ask for a critique, but really want affirmation. Especially on an open forum (the Design Showcase is open to the public) I am cautious about being negative.

All that being true, I've been so busy preparing for a class I gave yesterday that I didn't look at your post.

Yes, some folks hesitate to post negative comments, but when honest critique is requested, most will respond sincerely. I guess the main thing is to make constructive comments.

I first saw your thread when I checked the forum between flights in the Atlanta airport, but since the weekend was filled with activities for my nephew's wedding and yesterday was catch-up day, this morning was my first opportunity to post a meaningful reply.

Patience is a virtue, Joe.

Yup that's true. I'm glad I started this thread because not only did I not properly word the "Another Shadowbox" thread correctly but w/o starting this thread I wouldn't have realized that I should ask for a critique - oh well live and learn.

I do like constructive comments and appreciate it when I receive them. Next time I will make sure to ask for the critique. I must be getting crankier in my old age...:smile-new: Joe

Opinions are like a lot of things, often not wanted, not accurate, self serving and often an excuse for some one who has nothing constructive to say to voice their opinion.
This paragraph as an excellent example. Custom framing is often an artistic opinion and the customer's is the one that counts. Joe, you are probably your own worse critic, and that is how it should be. In 6 to 12 months, look back on a photo of this piece and see how you feel about it then????? Time can certainly adjust opinions in this business.
I liked your job, because I didn't have to do it, get it clean and spend way more time on it than I got paid for. The older you get the less time you have to "work for free" and that, Sir, is not an opinion.

Have fun on the "Corner" Folks are really nice and helpful. Les

Les is right Joe, the only opinion that counts is the customers. They loved what they designed and laid out. Don't try to fix what wasn't broken. If you had changed the layout they maybe wouldn't have liked it. So be happy..................don't worry..................

I agree that the only opinion that is important is the customer's. There's no telling whether the customer would have liked or not liked a different layout!
I reckon Joe was asking for opinions to get other ideas on layouts and designs and I'm sure he now has some other good ideas to consider in the future!

Thank you all for your comment, they are all appreciated.

Yes Ormond, this is exactly the reason I asked for opinions. There were things about the layout and box I didn't like and because I posted the picture I got many good ideas for the next shadowbox I do.

You are all right, its the customer that counts and he did really like it and he paid the hefty bill without a blink to the eye. Since the customer did most of the designing I wouldn't have changed it but if I had more ideas when he first gave it to me I may have been able to steer him in another direction that may have been more pleasing to the eye.

Well, again thank you all. Joe
