Hello everyone,

I am a member of PPFA and read this forum occasionally, along with the Framer's Grumble, but I just recently joined the forum. I have had a custom picture frame shop in Tampa Fl for the past 15 years (Florida Frame & Art) and I am looking for a experienced framer/counter person. I will post the position in the classified section, but wanted to introduce myself first!

Hello Al,
Likewise good luck with your search.
A good counter-person can be a lady in at least her forties, whose children have moved out of house.
The reasons for this is, that most customers are females and they can relate well with someone of their own age, is mature enough to give the appearance of being experienced.

When you get a lady in their twenties, childbirth, bringing children to and from school, time off when children are sick come into play. It may seem sexist, but that is the way it is in life. I am not saying, that a male counter-person is not an option. Of course, you cannot advertise for these requirements due to legal reasons.

Sometimes, it is possible to find an employee among your friends or even one of your customers.

Thanks

Thanks, Cliff and Kai for the welcomes. Kai, thank you for the advice. It has become increasing difficult to find an experienced framer, as most have gone on to other fields of work. (Possibly with higher pay too!).

Thanks again,

Al

It is also worthwhile to make a list of all the tasks you currently perform, that can be done by a teenager, who likes to work part-time. These people don't cost much in wages and you do not have to spend much time on instruction. If they leave after a few months, then you just get another teenager.
The tasks I have in mind are: making coffee, sweeping the floor, vacuuming the shop, tidying the shop, cleaning the shop-windows, cleaning the kitchen and toilet, sorting and putting out the garbage, opening packages and check whether everything is in the package that has been ordered, sweeping the pavement outside, answering the phone, running errands and so on.

These tasks can take much time and if someone else does them, you can carry on with concentrating upon framing.
My wife does all the accounting, so she pays all the bills and keeps track of the money and money out. A student at university studying economics or finance can do this type of work part-time. Again freeing you up.
