Marty Horowitz, owner of Goldleaf Framemakers in Santa Fe, N.M. and a popular instructor in the framing and gilding industry, died July 2.
According to the website, Marty began making picture frames at age 13, for 50 cents an hour in a small shop on Long Island, N.Y., where the owners nurtured his interest in art and framemaking.
Enrolling at The School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1967, he studied with gilding maestro Henry Rothman and began to learn water gilding and picture frame patination, and the importance of historically and artistically accurate picture framing.
After graduation, Marty joined Kulicke Picture Frames, and worked at their factory in Greenwich Village.
He moved to Frames Unlimited in 1973, serving as general manager and vice president of sales from their headquarters in Soho, N.Y.,
In 1976, he went to work for the Sam Flax Corporation, owners of four Manhattan art supply and picture framing stores.
Marty rejoined Rothman in 1980 to form Rothman and Horowitz, Master Framemakers, and spent the next 6 years framing for galleries, contract accounts, and museums.
After developing allergies to some of the framemaking materials, he left hands-on framemaking to become New York City sales representative for Abe Munn Picture Frames.
Marty started teaching in the early 1980s, leading popular classes at national trade shows and exhibitions produced by Picture Framing Magazine, the Society of Gilders, and the Professional Picture Framers Association. He also wrote An Introduction to Water Gilding (PFM PubCo., 1998), and numerous articles in trade publications.
In 1988, Marty moved to Santa Fe, where Goldleaf Framemakers of Santa Fe was the culmination of his many years in the industry.
Marty also was an artist, with gilded art objects shown at galleries and museums in New York, Santa Fe, Wyoming, Memphis and Scottsdale.
According to his son's post on Facebook, a service will be streamed on Friday, July 10; and an in-person service will be planned after the pandemic crisis.
