ABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKER:

Harvard Art provides professional conservation of gilded objects, with particular expertise in period picture frames. The company is led by Susan B. Jackson, an accomplished gilder and conservator and a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation. Susan has a great depth of knowledge about the gilded surface and its preservation, having apprenticed as a gilder for two years before becoming a conservator. She has been a member of the board of directors of the New England Conservation Association and the Society of Gilders. Harvard Art is entrusted with historical objects from the finest museums and collections in New England and beyond. They find equal delight in working with individuals to take care of their family treasures and objects of more sentimental than monetary value. Founded by Susan Jackson in 1989, the Harvard Art team has today expanded to include several conservation technicians. "Our goal, as we handle this fragile medium," says Susan, "is to make the period objects appear to have aged well."

Attendees are invited to optionally bring along an antique frame, for the evening/dinner portion. The speaker will evaluate some of the frames, and go through their history.

As of this writing, the available spots are half sold out. Register soon, before this one sells out! www.neppfa.org

This will prove to be an interesting event.

This event "sold out" temporarily today, so a third museum docent was added. This will open up another block of seats, and is expected to sell out.

If you are planning to attend, please reserve your space soon at www.neppfa.org

New England Professional Picture Framers: A Presentation by Sue Jackson of Harvard Art

Susan Jackson of Harvard Art will be giving a talk, “Period Frames: History, Materials and Conservation”, at the March meeting of the New England Professional Picture Framers Association, which is being held at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Sunday 2 March 2014.

Edmund Tarbell, Mercie cutting flowers, 1912, Currier Museum of Art, in a Foster Brothers frame

The presentation will focus on three topics concerning period frames: their history, how to look at a frame and the conservation of frames. The history of frames will consist of a brief overview, with the main emphasis on American frames. In considering how to look at a frame, the historic materials used in framemaking, methods of identifying these materials, and different types of gilding (gold leaf and gold-coloured surfaces) will be discussed. Finally, Sue will describe what frame conservation entails, different aspects of the treatment of a frame, and how to work with a frame conservator. She will also show examples of various period frame conservation projects.

This presentation follows an afternoon tour of the Currier Museum of Art, focusing on the framing of the Museum’s collection; the event includes dinner and a question-&-answer session with Sue Jackson. Full details can be viewed online at www.neppfa.com

I believe there are still 6 spots left for this weekend's guided museum tour, and evening dinner meeting. The event originally sold out, and the museum was able to increase the size of our party - by adding an additional docent.

The time to register by postal mail has passed, but you can still register online at www.neppfa.com

Your PayPal/Credit card receipt will serve as your admission ticket.

We expect this to sell out, so don't delay! :)

It'll be great to see everyone this weekend.
