Focus on: Mark Klostermeyer, MCPF
February 24, 2014 by Sheila Pursglove

PMA Treasurer and former PPFA President Mark Klostermeyer, MCPF, was honored with the PPFA Paul Frederick Distinction for Leadership Award at the PPFA Convention in January.
Mark Klostermeyer’s rich baritone contributes to the four-part harmony of the award-winning Alexandria Harmonizers, the Mid Atlantic District of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
Mark also enjoys a “two-part harmony” in his career – blending together long time participation in PMA and in the Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA – a PMA member association).
Currently serving as Treasurer on the PMA National Board, Mark has previously served in different capacities for PMA for several years.
He also served as President of PPFA from 2005-06, and on several national PPFA committees and boards, including Certification, Chapter Relations, and the PPFA Board of Directors. A member of the Oaks Club of past PPFA presidents, he currently serves on the PPFA Advisory Board/Strategic Planning Committee, and is a long-time active member of the National Capital PPFA Chapter. One of the first PPFA members to earn Certified Picture Framer and Master Certified Picture Framer designations, he serves as an MCPF examiner; and as a judge in PPFA Chapter and International framing competitions.
For his sterling work for PPFA, Mark was honored with the Paul Frederick Distinction for Leadership Award at the PPFA Convention in January; the award is named for an early pioneer with the Association.
A native of Lincoln, Neb., who grew up and attended school in Virgina, Mark is a second-generation framer who has enjoyed the opportunity to continue running the family business. Design Frames – the oldest frame shop in Falls Church, Va. – has been in business for nearly half a century, and Mark and his staff offer award-winning frame designs, lacing of needlework, photo restoration and antique preservation.
“Framing is very rewarding because it allows us to take a piece from a customer and return it looking better than when they brought it in – seeing that customer’s reaction is wonderful and never gets old,” he says.
Since becoming involved with PMA, photography has become a very important part of his store’s bottom line. “We first started offering photo restoration after attending my first PMA Convention,” he explains. “Then, after establishing a relationship with a lab, I started offering printing and enlargement services. It’s important to differentiate our store from all the other businesses out there, so it’s become somewhat of a mission to show that photos can be presented in something other than white mats and black frames. Canvas transfers, metallic prints, oversize prints, multi-prints are all areas we’re offering right now.”
Design Frames has belonged to PPFA/PMA for over a quarter century. “Membership allows me to keep up with industry trends and to interact with industry peers,” Mark says. “My business has improved with my relationship with PMA/PPFA – it’s so intertwined I can’t imagine one without the other. My hope for PMA/PPFA is that it will always be in forefront of our industries, helping to lead the way in the success of all of our members.”
Two highlights of his year are the PMA and PPFA Conventions, as well as attending workshops and seminars at PPFA National Capital Chapter events and regional PMA events. “Education is the soul of any Association – it’s not only a way to pass on the learned lessons of an industry to a new generation, but also maintains enthusiasm in our current members,” he says. “Every Convention I’ve attended there are new things I’ve learned to make my business better, such as dealing with social networks and tricks using various software systems. This year’s classes and educators, as always were excellent.”
Mark is looking forward to PMA’s The Big Photo Show in Los Angeles in May – which also will feature the PPFA framing area, “Take It To The Wall.”
“The Big Photo Show is an opportunity to showcase all things photo to the general public,” he says. “This is the second year for the show and we’re very excited to see the enthusiasm that’s being generated. Last year, ‘Prosumers’ were not only able to see first hand the latest in cameras, lens, and accessories but were also able to buy them off the floor from local retailers. In addition, they participated in workshops and demonstrations learning how to improve their photography skills with additional information available at PMA members’ stores. Our plan is to take ‘The Big Photo Show’ on the road as a way to reach out to the huge market of photo enthusiasts and drive business back to our members.”
Mark has enjoyed singing with the Alexandria Harmonizers for over 30 years; the group has had the honor to perform all over the world, from the Kennedy Center, and the White House to Toronto, Beijing, China, and later this year in Normandy, France, and in Cologne, Germany. “One of the highlights was singing “Stars and Stripes Forever” on the Great Wall of China while a group of locals cheered us on,” he says. “It was a truly a ‘once in a lifetime’ day.”
