Glad to say that my competition piece made it to Vegas and Back (today) without suffering any damage.

Question?
This year for the first time I DID NOT receive the paperwork showing how the judges scored my piece, nor since I did not place at nationals this year a participant ribbon. Are we not receiving those items this year, or is it just an oversight? Receiving the judges score sheet is very informative and part of the educational process.

you should have received the judges score sheet. they would be in the back pocket with your description form.

I helped place them back in the print entry pieces.

Is there maybe just one judges form instead of three?

Sarah, the only thing I got back was the Description form that I sent in (in the back pocket) the return shipping form ( from me) and the little blue condition report. My entry #110

Hi Sarah, Got a quick question for someone who knows the competition project. Maybe you could help me out with my understanding of those pieces entered at the National level? It says that the competition board reviews the entries and only their top four get to be judged - is that the way it is done? Being new to this, it came as a surprise that all entries don't get a chance to be judged and have reviews sent back to them to better their designer skills. All of the prints get displayed and have a chance for crowd favorite award? Would the same rules apply to the Open division of the contest? Thanks for any help in getting these straight for me. John

PS: Hope your heat press is still working!

With all of the time pressure in trying to pack everything up in Las Vegas, it is possible that your judging sheet was accidentally stuck to someone else's; that is what happened to mine.

I received my piece and ribbon last week, but not the judging sheets. However, another framer e-mailed me that mine where with his, and they will be sending them to me. So I will be getting mine shortly. No big deal.

All of us should probably check to make sure that we don't accidentally have someone else's.

Hi John,

Please let me clarify, from the Competition Board. It sounds as if your question is dealing with two very different issues. The "top four entries" you mention deals only with the procedures for the PRINT selection for next year -- not with the framed competition PRINT entries at the International level of the framing competition. All framed entries for the PRINT competition get judged -- not just the "top four." The framed PRINT entries go through a preliminary screening by the judging panel (three judges). The top contenders (at least a couple dozen of them) get judged by all three judges and the competitor gets three separate score sheets back. The few pieces that don't make the first cut by the judges still do get judged -- but they will only get one "group" judging score sheet back. If you are new to competitions, you need to know that judging at both chapter level and the International finals uses the same criteria for judging (but different judges) at both -- but at chapter level there is no "first cut" round and you will always get three score sheets back from chapter level judges.

Your interpretation is correct -- ALL pieces are displayed and are eligible for the Popular Choice (crowd favorite) award. The rules for the OPEN category are slightly different in that there is no "first cut" round since entries are always fewer in number. All OPEN entries get judged by all three judges and competitors get three score sheets back. Again, all are displayed and eligible for the Popular Choice award in the OPEN category.

When artwork is submitted for being considered for the official PRINT for next year, those pieces of artwork are screened by the Competition Board and the top four OF THOSE are selected. The month following the convention, those four pieces of artwork are then scanned and sent to chapter presidents and PPFA judges for their vote. From those four pieces of artwork, the winner of this voting is what is chosen for the official artwork for the PRINT competition for the following year.

Hope this clarifies it for you! The Competition Board will be happy to provide any further information you might need.

Thanks so much for your input Russ! You make a very good suggestion.

We apologize for this snafu. As you might guess, the day of judging is very long and tiring -- sometimes as much as 12 or more hours. We collected all score sheets and put them in order so that they could be put in the back pocket with the description forms. Our very tired judges were willing to take care of this task and the constant commotion of the day may have played a part in having some misplaced.

Please check your sheets and help us get them back to their rightful owners. Again, we apologize and we appreciate your bringing this to our attention so we can work harder to prevent it from happening again.

One thought on the score sheets would be to be sure it did not fall out in the shipping package. I am sure that has already been checked but just wanted to suggest this.

John,

So sorry to hear that you didn't get any score sheets back. As Sarah has already explained, the Competition Board does not make / keep copies of any competition score sheets. We will continue to try and find out what happened, and hopefully anyone who might have a wrong set of score sheets with their piece being returned will let someone know so we can try to get yours back to you.

In the meantime -- we do have our Excel spreadsheet used during judging. It has the numeric score for each question on the score sheet for each entry, but there are no judges' written comments / critique to go along with the numbers. The best I can do is recreate your score sheet(s) for you with the numbers only.

I will work on this a little later and send it to you privately at your email address. Does this work for you?

Again, I apologize for this competition problem. It is our responsibility and we are trying to find out how this could have happened.

(Re-posting this; my ISP just went haywire. Sorry if post appears more than once.)
