“Unframing Art – Discovering a Frame’s Hidden Past”

Presented by Susan Duhl

PPFA Competition Awards

Spend an autumn afternoon at the
James A. Michener Museum in historic, beautiful Doylestown, PA. The area boasts many unique places to grab a bite to eat. Or better yet, spend the night while you’re in town! It really is quite a culturally abundant destination.

We will begin the day with a private tour of the Michener Museum. Next, Philadelphia based Conservator and Collections Manager
Susan Duhl has a wonderful presentation in store for us. Last but not least, join us while we award this year’s local chapter level PPFA Competition winners and cheer them on to the road to Vegas!
During Susan’s presentation, she will discuss how “unframing” reveals a fascinating history about the artwork or artifact, framing materials and techniques,long-term preservation, and the aesthetics of the contents. Awareness of physical properties in the type, interaction, and aging of materials can help predict potential problems, alert the need for special handling, and may dictate framing parameters. Conservators identify frames as enhancing display, but also as microclimates that can protect valuable materials over time.
