4 - 40x60 photos to mount

I have a potential customer that is working with our local library in getting 4-6 historical photos put on the walls. She wants them done "exactly how they have them at Super One." (local grocery store) I've looked at those pictures and it appears they are mounted on 1/2" black gator board type but I'm not sure. I am trying to get information on this.

Has anyone done this type of project?

Thanks in advance.
Sue

For that size, that is probably the material you want. Half inch foam board is pretty rigid, but in that size, I would go with gator.

I don't think it would be out of line to ask the store manager who supplied the prints in the grocery.

Mounting to 1/2" gator isn't difficult. Trimming it without the proper equipment is. If you do mount to gator, a gator scraper and a DRS tool are musts. The DRS is expensive but a worthwhile investment if you want quality, bump free mounts - especially in gator.

40 x 60 and 1/2" gator @ 4 mounts is a terrible size for yield. If you buy 48 x 98, you get 1 per board. If you buy 60 x 120 you only get 3 (but they won't end up perfectly at 40 x 60) and you have to be able to handle a 5' x 10' board. Then you will need one more - which can come out of the 48 x 96 - but there is tremendous waste.

Be sure you explore the cost of materials before you bid on the job. Unless you do a lot of mounting to 1/2" gator and can re-purpose the cutoffs, you need to expense the whole board for the job.

If you have a Piedmont Plastics near you, they have very competitive pricing.

Dumb question but here it goes: With a job like this is you do not have the proper equipment would it be wise to consult with a Sign Shop in the area?

Robin - not a dumb question at all....that was one of my thoughts.

I was able to contact the person who did the job.

He used 1/2" black core gator board and printed the photos directly onto the gator board.

I don't have all the equipment for this job so I'm sourcing it out to the company who did the photos at the
grocery store.

Thanks to all for expert advice. :)
