Exclamation PPFA honors Annual Service Award winners

PPFA honors Annual Service Award winners

February 4, 2013 by Sheila Pursglove

The Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA), a PMA member association, honored the following members during the PPFA All-Member Meeting and Luncheon held January 27 at the PPFA 2013 Annual Conference, Mirage Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nev.

PPFA President Ron Mason, CPF, presented the following award winners with their respective accolades:

    • PPFA Lifetime Achievement Award: Julius Shultz
Shultz, who also came to the end of two terms as Past President, was honored with the highest honor bestowed by the PPFA Board of Directors. The former CEO of Dax Manufacturers in New York State, Shultz was PPFA President from 1984 to 1985. The Certified Picture Framer designation was developed under his leadership; and the PPFA Guild and Standards Committee began creating the PPFA Guidelines for Framing Works of Art on Paper and Framing Works of Art on Canvas, as well as the Dictionary of Art & Picture Framing Terms.
While on the PPFA Board, Shultz worked to improve PPFA by reworking the Mission Statement and by-laws. He emphasized Conventions and improved education, and spearheaded getting retailers and suppliers to work together.
A PPFA Lifetime Member, he was honored with the PPFA Award of Distinction for Leadership in 1987.

    • Paul Frederick Distinction for Leadership Award: Ormond Williams, MCPF

Owner of Ormond’s Framing in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, Williams began framing in 1985, earned the CPF designation in 1991, and was the first Australian framer to obtain the MCPF designation in 2008. He was elected Chairperson of PPFA Australia & New Zealand in 2009, and served for three years.
He has worked tirelessly to promote the framing industry in Australia, organized many networking meetings; was a driving force in promoting CPF and MCPF studies and exams; and a tireless organizer and educator at PPFA events running at The Framing Show in Australia.
He also organized an appeal to help the Brisbane framers whose businesses were damaged in the January 2011 floods in Queensland.
Williams excels at promoting his business, PPFA and the framing industry through social media, is active on the PPFA Framer’s Corner and The Picture Framers Grumble online forums, and is committed to promoting the framing industry through his Facebook pages. He also produced a quality PPFA Australia & New Zealand newsletter every two months.

    •PPFA Service Award: Mike Labbe

This award honors members who have had an impact on the industry because of special and innovative contributions. Mike Labbe, co-owner of Get the Picture in Rhode Island, is the technical wizard behind the PPFA Framers Corner forum, and puts in long volunteer hours hosting and maintaining the site. He chairs the Framers Corner moderator committee and oversees the forum, devoting countless hours each day to the Framers Corner as well as to a non-PPFA forum, The Picture Framers Grumble.
As an IT consultant, Labbe is very technology oriented and is often sought out as a beta tester, offering suggestions for improvements and upgrades to framing programs. Get the Picture was one of the first shops to incorporate visualization software.

•Vivian Kistler Recognition for Innovation Award: Pat Kotnour, Attach-EZ

The winner of this award – named for the late Vivian Kistler, framing industry educator and author, herself a recipient of the PPFA Innovation Award – is Pat Kotnour, recognized for repurposing products from other industries to create easy and economical solutions, altering and/or packaging these items in kits and making them easily accessible. These include Attach EZ, a tagging tool adapted with smaller nylon fasteners, for quick and easy mounting methods for textiles and objects. Kotnour also introduced Invisimount Clear Film as an alternative method, and instructed framers on how to use EZ Fix and Fill on mouldings to correct imperfections.
Kotnour demonstrates at trade shows and brings her classes to Chapter meetings at a minimum cost, rebating chapters a percentage of sales she makes to members.
Kotnour also was founder and first president of the North Central chapter, and her hard work and tenacity helped them put on a very successful trade show and educational conference.

    • Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award: Adela Davis, MCPF

Davis was recommended by several members of the Central Texas Chapter for her work over the past years. A chapter member since 1997, she has served as president, program coordinator and newsletter editor, has worked tirelessly to organize very successful educational conferences and trade shows, and organized and judged local and international competitions
She also has worked on the chapter’s election committee, getting volunteers and working to create on on-line ballot voting system. Many of her efforts focus on improving communication through the Internet and social media.

The PPFA Awards and Recognition Committee was chaired by Linda Wassell, MCPF; with Robin Gentry, MCPF; Jini Lumsden, MCPF; Rob Bottge; Fran Gray, MCPF; and Board liaison Ken Link, CPF.

In addition, outgoing PPFA Board members Ken Link, CPF; Rob Clark; Julius Shultz; and George Alvarez, MCPF, were honored for their service.
Robert Gulf, CPF, president of the PPFA Great Lakes Chapter and owner of Knollwood Art Frames in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., custom framed the awards. Larson Juhl donated the frames and Museum glass, and Bainbridge donated the mats.
