PPFA announces two new Master Certified Picture Framers
The two framers – who previously earned the Certified Picture Framer (CPF) designation from PPFA – are Dana Fisher, MCPF, Flax Art and Frame in Chicago; and Elizabeth Evans, MCPF, Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art, San Antonio, Texas.
The MCPF designation is the highest in the association; and Fisher and Evans join 70 other framers worldwide who have earned this designation. The 4-hour exam – with emphasis on preservation framing of various media – took place January 26, 2015, and was hosted by Thunderbird Gallery in Las Vegas.
Fisher and Evans each presented four framed works: art on paper, art on canvas, textile, and an object. These pieces – each accompanied by a written description, including an explanation of the artwork, handling issues, framing methods, and materials used – were disassembled, inspected, and scored by the examiners, using the established criteria set forth by the Certification Board.
Each framer then had 90 minutes to complete a randomly selected framing project, and to complete a condition report; cut and join a frame; size and cut a double mat; size and cut a back mat and filler; attach artwork; size and cut glass; fit and finish; and complete a framing description form, including methods and techniques used, and the reasons for using them.
Ellen Collins, MCPF, chair of the PPFA Certification Board, organized the exam with Certification Board members Alan Abeyta, CPF; Elli Wollangk, MCPF; and PPFA National Board Director Joyce Michels, MCPF. The examiners were Fred Horton, MCPF; and Meghan MacMillan, MCPF.
In addition, two PPFA members sat the Certified Picture Framer (CPF) exam during the PPFA 2053 Convention; Ellen Collins taught the Recertification Course required every four years; and David Lantrip, MCPF, GCF, taught “Introduction to the CPF exam,” and “Introduction to the MCPF exam;” all were well attended.
“Congratulations to Dana and Elizabeth for successfully completing and passing the MCPF Exam, that tests your knowledge of many aspects of picture framing and allows you to show the grasp of that knowledge,” says PPFA President Robin Gentry, MCPF. “Thank you both for your commitment to our profession.”
