PPFA announces winners of the 2016 International Framing Competition

The finals of the Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA) International Framing Competition were held January 23 during the PPFA 2016 Convention at the West Coast Art & Frame Expo/The National Conference, in the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nev. The International Competition is the grand finale of PPFA Chapter level competitions.

Entries were displayed in a framing gallery on the Expo floor, where viewers could vote for Popular Choice.

Winners were announced January 24, at a PPFA “Competition Celebration” sponsored by Tru Vue during the PPFA member meeting; Popular Choice Awards, sponsored by Picture Framing Magazine, were announced January 26 during the PPFA President’s Dinner, sponsored by Encore, Tru Vue, and WCAF, when all winners were once again acknowledged.

In the PRINT category, all participants framed the same “Little Birds” artwork by Chris Paschke. The winners are:


  • First Place and Judges Award sponsored by Vermont Hardwoods, for Drama (Most Dramatic Viewer Impact): J. Gallo and Boris Smorodinsky, Striving Artists, Chatsworth, Calif.
  • Second Place, Popular Choice, and High Point First Time Entry: Marilyn Hanson, Tim Hanson, Rob Borgen from The Great Frame Up, Burnsville, Minn.
  • Third Place: Ursula Overdiek, Hang Ups Picture Framing, Cedar Park, Texas
  • First Honorable Mention: Ria Richey, CPF, Creative Framing, Sierra Madre Calif.
  • Second Honorable Mention: Christine Hasenhundl, Hako-Oja Studio, Wainwright, Alta.
  • Third Honorable Mention: Kristen Ling, A Framers Touch, Forest Grove, Ore.
  • Judges Award sponsored by PPFA, for Technique (Technical Merit for Execution of Drawn Lines & Painted Panel): Patty Mehmood, Heritage Custom Framing, Houston, Texas
  • Judges Award sponsored by Frank’s Fabrics, for Creative Use of Fabric: Donna Erwin, Columbia River Gallery, Troutdale, Ore.
  • Judges Award sponsored by FrameReady by SoftTouch Solutions, for Imagination (Artistic Design, Creativity & Presentation): Ed Pioli, Walden Framer, Lexington, Mass.
  • Judges Award sponsored by Larson-Juhl for Theme (Integration of Framing & Art): John Barlowe, Frame Shop Gallery, Holland, Ohio

The OPEN category brought in an array of unusual framed items. The winners are:


  • First Place and Popular Choice: John Ranes II, CPF, GCF; Candy Wiater; and Michelle Kittredge. The Frame Workshop of Appleton, Appleton, Wis.
  • Second Place: Sara Applegate, Applegate Framing, Vienna, Va.
  • Third Place: Ed Pioli, Walden Framer, Lexington, Mass.
  • High Point First Time Entry: Patrick Smith, Jerry's Artarama, Raleigh, N.C.

PRINT judges were Robin Gentry, MCPF, (head judge); Meghan MacMillan, MCPF; and Adela Davis, MCPF, with secretary Elli Wollangk; OPEN judges were Linda Wassell, MCPF, (head judge); Chris Paschke, CPF, GCF; and Dennis Duarte, MCPF; with secretaries Kimberley Breil, MCPF, and Alan Abeyta, CPF, from the Competition Board. The Competition Board Chairperson was Linda Pujo, MCPF.

 
Congrats to all the Winners! There were some beautiful pieces and the judging was difficult. Thank you All for participating.
